ROOSI GNOME

Roosi Gnome is the Estonian cousin of Knit Gnome sporting a tall embellished hat with knitted braids and Roosimine inlay knitting. His beard has a bit more texture with garter stitch from roaming through the winds off the Baltic Sea.

Create a gnome in different sizes by changing the yarn weight and needle size.

  • The gauge will affect the finished size of your gnome.

    Height: 13” / 33 cm

    Widest circumference: 12.75” / 33 cm

  • Yarn is held double to create dense fabric

    John Arbon Knit By Numbers DK (100% Falkland Merino, 273 yds / 250 m – 100 g or mini skein 68 yds / 62 m - 25g)

    MC: 1 skein 100g of colour 74

    CC1: 1 mini skein of colour 19

    CC2: 1 mini skein of colour 55

or desired DK yarn held together in following amounts:

    MC: 137 yds / 125 m

    CC1: 69 yds / 63 m

    CC2 : 69 yds / 63 m

Changing the weight of yarn or holding yarn double will change the finished size of your gnome. Heavier weight yarn and larger needles will produce a larger gnome, while finer yarn with smaller needles will produce a smaller gnome because of gauge.

  • The gnome is knit from the base of the body to the top of the hat. Stitches are cast-on using a crochet provisional cast-on with waste yarn to allow the gnome to be stuffed.

The hat features an Estonian knitted braid, Kihnu vits, and Roosimine inlay patterns in a contrasting colour. Tutorial videos for these techniques are included in the pattern.

The base of the body also features a Kihnu vits.

The waste yarn provisional cast-on is taken out and those stitches placed back onto needles to finish the base. Before completing the base, the gnome is stuffed.

The base is finished by decreasing in a similar fashion to crown shaping on a hat.

The nose and beard knit are knit separately, then sewn onto the body. The beard is knit as a flat garter stitch piece that is attached along the edge of the hat. The nose which is knit in the round is then sewn onto the beard.
