KNITTING PATTERNS Mulgi sweater knitting pattern (English)

Mulgi sweater knitting pattern (English)

£6.00

Named after the region Mulgimaa in southern Estonia, mulgi is the region’s dialect, as well as the name of the people who come from there. Mulgimaa is known for its distinct black folk costume coats worn by men and is embellished with red cording. In the spirit of this region, the Mulgi sweater is adorned with red embellishment in the form of bobbles.

The saddle stitch construction is done seamlessly from the top down. Two saddles or small strips are knit with the live sts put on hold on waste yarn or a stitch holder for working the sleeve. Stitches are picked up along each saddle edge to work for the front and back on the sweater.

The front and back are worked flat through the armhole shaping. The front and back are joined in the round after the underarm.

Stitches for the sleeve are picked up along the edges of the armhole as well as the saddle stitches on hold and then knit down to the wrist.

The saddle stitch shoulder features wrapped nuppud or bobbles in a contrasting colour over a 2x2 rib pattern for a smock effect.
